Watch: Gold-medal contender David Nyika and coach in hilarious exchange over beard bet - 'That wasn't the agreement'

April 13, 2018

New Zealand Commonwealth Games boxing coach Jake Rapira admits he's worried about his beard, despite coming to a compromise that saw it dyed instead of being shaved off.

Boxer David Nyika said before the competition started that if the team won five medals, Rapira would have to shave it off.

The Taranaki coach says he never agreed to the bet, but was out-voted.

The team achieved its goal, but desperate to keep his impressive facial stylings, he offered to colour it instead.

"That wasn't the agreement, but we made a compromise to dye it instead of having to shave it," Nykia said today, after winning his way through to tomorrow's 91kg gold medal match.

Despite the colour job, Rapira said he was concerned about what plans Nyika, who dyed his own hair gold before the games, was hatching.

"I am a bit worried about what he's going to decide to do with the beard next."
