Up to 20 residents of a lifestyle village are making a difference for young children in need in the South Island.
The Crafting Ladies of the McKenzie Lifestyle Village in Geraldine, South Canterbury, are knitting blankets, hats and buying toys for children who are victims to crime, domestic violence and road accidents.
The knitting group, whose eldest member is 93, meet once or twice a week to knit together.
Timaru Police have received 199 parcels from the women.
Area Commander South Canterbury, Inspector Dave Gaskin, says the women don't ask for anything in return for their acts of kindness.
"At the moment police drop these toys locally, however we are looking to extend this service to other areas in Canterbury where there is also some need," Inspector Gaskin said.
"The plan is to keep the knitted packs in the rear of the patrol vehicles so they can be handed out when staff see a need for them at a job they attend."
