Brave Kiwi fighter Troy Garton wins bronze after losing boxing semi with torn ACL in leg

April 13, 2018

Brave New Zealand boxer Troy Garton has been beaten by unanimous decision in her women’s 60kg category semi-final against Australia’s Anja Stridsman, but will leave the Gold Coast with a bronze medal anyway.

While the Kiwi certainly didn’t lack for heart, she couldn’t get inside as Stridsman used her jab to great effect.

Garton will get a bronze medal along with the other beaten semi-finalist, Tetunde Odunuga of Nigeria.

She admitted to 1 NEWS' Stephen Stuart after the bout she wasn't fighting at her optimum level at the Commonwealth Games.

"I didn't do what I needed to do, there's a reason for that, but I'll leave that for now," she said.

She later said she had a torn ACL in her right leg.

It's the second bronze won by a Kiwi boxer, following Tasmyn Benny yesterday

A further three New Zealand boxers are in semi-final action today.

Garton said she wasn't 100 per cent.

"I'm not blaming that, I had to stick to simple game plan, which means I couldn't move around, so because of that it was a bit limited."

She paid tribute to her rival, who she said deserved to move into the decider.

"She was just landing the straighter, cleaner shots, and they like that," she said.

"I couldn't get on the angles to counter her on her properly.

"Good win by her, she deserves that."

Stridsman will fight England's Paige Murney in the gold medal match tomorrow.
