Watch: 'I put in a protest' - Kiwi boxing coach stitched up by team over beard-shaving wager

April 12, 2018

Jake Rapira is battling hard to retain his beard after a bet - which he claims he never agreed too - that will see him lose his impressive facial styling after the NZ boxing team claimed five medals at the Commonwealth Games.

Tasmyn Benny has already secured bronze, while fellow female boxers Alexis Pritchard and Troy Garton are also guaranteed at least third place.

David Nyika and Patrick Mailata are also in semi-finals.

Rapira told 1 NEWS' Stephen Stuart that Nyika said in a team meeting that if the team secured at least five medals, his beard had to go.

"I said no, everyone else voted yes, I had no say in this," he said ringside.

"When we got that fifth medal it was a bittersweet victory for us - yay, we got the medals, but I'm losing my beard."

He is protesting the bet - he is prepared to dye his beard silver or rainbow - but is desperate to keep it.
