Vietnamese man to spend at least four years in jail after smuggling $11.6m meth into New Zealand

Customs locate 3.8kg of meth in water system

A Vietnamese man has been sentenced to 10 years in jail after pleading guilty at Auckland District Court this week to smuggling methamphetamine into New Zealand.

Than Qui Phan, 23, will serve at least in four years in prison.

Between January and March 2017, Customs officers found meth inside a home drinking water system, and in the packaging of two consignments of alloy wheel trims.

In total, the packages hid 11.6 kilograms of meth, with a potential street value of up to $11.6 million.

Customs say in a statement that Phan used different names and addresses for the packages that they linked to an apartment he lived in.

He was arrested after Customs searched the apartment and found more methamphetamine, cannabis, electronic equipment, a meth pipe and around $13,000 cash.

Two late model cars, a BMW and Mercedes Benz, were also seized as part of the investigation.

A women who was previously charged has been acquitted of all charges.
