'That's what I came here to do' - Blacks Sticks keeper on Gold Coast semi-final heroics

April 12, 2018

The Black Sticks women reserve goalkeeper Grace O'Hanlan says she did her homework after helping engineer a stunning victory over England, which saw her side win through to the Commonwealth Games gold medal match.

O'Hanlan entered the field of play for the shoot-out, after the scores were tied at 0-0 at the end of time.

She saved four of five shots, with Sam Harrison and then Stacey Michelsen scoring to give New Zealand a thrilling 2-1 victory.

Speaking to 1 NEWS' Kimberlee Downs shortly after the match, she said she came prepared, given the skill of the two starting keepers.

"I scouted really well, you might have seen me with my homework out there, I work really hard," she said.

"To their credit I've seen them quite a lot so I've done a lot of practice."

She admitted goalkeeping was stressful, but that's what she was there for.

"If you're playing well, no-one notices you, if you play badly, everyone notices you.

"There's a lot of pressure there regardless, it's practice, practice, practice.

"I was prepared, I came prepared that that was my role - that's what I came here to do."

On Sunday they will play the winner of the Australia India semi-final.
