A person has died after being trapped under a car in the Wellington suburb of Wainuiomata.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson told 1 NEWS they were called to the incident just after midday.

A large police presence could be seen outside the residential address the afternoon.

A police spokesperson described it as a tragic incident that will be referred to the coroner.
