The building owners decided to evacuate after their own engineers deemed it to be potentially unsafe. They've told the Wellington City Council they want more time to look into it and that evacuating the building is a precaution.
Wellington City Council told 1 NEWS it will be working with the building owners and structural engineers to help check the building. It said it will know more in the next 48 hours.
Jacquie Hastie from the City Council said in the meantime there will not be cordons put up around the building to protect pedestrians, as there is no imminent risk of building collapse.
