Another front is moving onto the upper North Island tonight bringing a chance of heavy rain and yet another thunderstorm risk over Auckland after the city was battered by severe winds on Tuesday night.

"Thankfully they are not expected to be the squally gusty type that has been seen over the previous few days," according to MetService.

Lisa Murray from MetService says there's a chance the heavy rain will fall during rush hour traffic time later today.

This front will lie slow moving across southern Auckland and Coromandel to northern Waikato and Bay of Plenty throughout tomorrow.

Auckland's overall weekend weather is not looking good for those wanting to get out and about but everywhere else is expected to be much drier.

A narrow ridge of high pressure is set to bring a day of settled weather across most of New Zealand on Saturday.

On Sunday an front is set to bring heavy rain to the western South Island.
