Lightning strike puts halt to flights at Wellington Airport after lights out on runway

A lightning strike on Wellington's airport has caused flights to halt going in and out of the capital.

A Wellington Airport spokesperson told 1 NEWS the strike happened at 7.09pm, causing lights to go out on the runway.

This grounded 20 flights and means no flights can land either.

They anticipate flights should go again later this evening.

MetService forecast showers, hail and thunderstorms this evening.
