Kiwi hammer thrower Julia Ratcliffe says her gold medal performance was "totally unbelievable" after admitting she had a terrible warm up for yesterday's Commonwealth Games competition.
Ratcliffe told 1 NEWS she was panicking heading into the event until she was given some calming words of advice from her coach who also happens to be her father.
"My warm-up throws were abysmal," she said.
"It looked like they'd given someone in the crowd a hammer to have a go at it and I was really freaking out.
"After the warm ups, [my dad] said, 'what are you doing? Just have some fun, just be calm' - that definitely played a big part."
Ratcliffe hurled 69.94m on her fifth effort to claim gold in the event.
Silver medallist, Australia's Alexandra Hulley, was the only one to get close to Ratcliffe with a throw of 68.20m. Another Australian, Lara Nielsen, was third with 65.03.
Event favourites, Olympic bronze-medallist England's Sophie Hitchon and Canada's Jillian Weir, were disqualified when they both fouled three times.
