Watch: 'Half the Gold Coast is Kiwis!' Stoked Tom Walsh talks family, Tokyo and his new teddy bear after Comm Games gold

April 10, 2018

Tom Walsh is giving himself a couple of days to relax and enjoy his latest gold medal, but the Kiwi shot putter says it'll then be time to refocus for the Tokyo Olympics.

Walsh, the indoor and outdoor world champion, had to work hard for his Commonwealth Games gold last night but did enough to claim it in the fourth round, snaring victory with a 21.41m effort.

His throw was well clear of second-placed Nigerian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi's silver medal-winning 21.14m and Canadian Tim Nedow's third-placed 20.91m

Walsh told 1 NEWS after the race he was going to enjoy the moment - probably with the friends and family he could see in Carrara Stadium as he competed.

"I think half the Gold Coast is Kiwis!" he said.

"I think I have about 15 or 20 family members on the back straight that made all the noise earlier.

"A lot of the time I'm competing on the other side of the world in different time zones so to have so close to home with so much support - it's pretty special."

Walsh said he will now look to improve on his bronze medal finish in Rio two years ago.

"I'm really looking forward to Tokyo and really looking forward to World Champs next year - I've got my title to defend!"
