Samoan weightlifter Lauititi Lui lived up to his status as flag-bearer for the small Pacific nation, showing plenty of heart and determination as he went for his final lift in yesterday's competition.
Lui attempted 228kg with his final clean and jerk in the men's 105kg+ category yesterday, having successful hoisted 225kg in his previous attempt.
The 22-year-old struggled to get the weight up onto his chest but knowing he needed a big lift to claim gold, attempted the final push anyway.
Lui realised almost instantly the weight was too much and pulled out, collapsing to the ground and undoing his belt in the process.
Privacy screens were quick to cover the athlete as he remained on the ground before he was finally taken away.
Lui was still in the lead at the time with a combined weight of 400kg in his lifts but he would go on to be pipped by Kiwi David Liti, who went three kilograms clear with his record-breaking final haul.
The Samoan weightlifter injured his knee in the final attempt and required a wheelchair for the medal ceremony where he graciously accepted his silver medal.
Early in the Games, Lui led Samoa at the opening ceremony after he was selected as their flag-bearer.
