April 10, 2018

South Africa's Akani Simbine credited Sonny Bill Williams as an inspiration after claiming a shock victory in the men's 100m sprint on the Gold Coast last night.

On the Carrara Stadium track last night Simbine took full advantage of, medal favourite Jamaica's Yohan Blake's stumbling start to claim victory in 10.03 seconds.

The 24-year-old spoke to 1 NEWS' Andrew Saville after becoming the first South African to win a Commonwealth 100m title.

"It's been a long time coming, and it's been a journey that's had its downs and ups, but I'm really grateful to be here."

As well as crediting his family, coach, team and country supporting him, Sambine also had a few words to say about Williams, who he met at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

"He's a really great guy. I take a lot of inspiration from him and his humbleness, and all the stuff he's achieved in his career.

"He is just an inspiration to me and a motivation to me."
