Auckland and upper North Island residents are warned to brace for severe thunderstorms this afternoon.
MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Auckland today.
With an early winter storm hitting much of the country, Auckland is bracing for its share of the deluge. (Source: Other)
MetService says: "A trough which produced close to 6000 lightning strikes over the Taranaki region ... is a about to head over Auckland and much of the upper North Island."
"This squall line is likely a period of heavy rain with gusts of up to 100km/h which will pick up to gusts of 120km/h this evening."
MetService are also warning boaties that thunderstorms off the west coast are bring gusts of up to 110km/h
The severe thunderstrom warning is effective until 3pm today.
