A Christchurch landlord has been fined by the Ministry of Building Innovation and Employment after it was found their rental proprty had a non-compliant gas installation.

The tenants had complained about a gas leak at the boarding house owned by Lina Liu, and upon inspection it was also found the property had no working smoke alarms.

MBIE said in statement that Ms Liu had failed to meet her obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act.

She was ordered to pay $4000 in exemplary damages for the health and safety breach, as well as $100 for failing to provide a statement of insulation.

"Just as important as the financial deterrent, the Tenancy Tribunal issued an Order that allows TCIT to return to the property to ensure the gas work has been fixed, which will ensure future tenants can safely live in the rental," and MBIE spokesperson said.
