Fallout over NZTA’s rejection of bi-lingual Rotorua welcome sign

It appears a misunderstanding is behind the tensions between the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and Rotorua Council over what is allowed on a proposed welcome sign into town.

Rotorua Council want to install a "Welcome to the city" sign but the NZTA has been restrictive over what exactly can be written on it.

NZTA says it gave a bi-lingual Rotorua welcome sign the thumbs down because current safety regulations don't allow a speed limit and welcome on the same sign.

But council officials believe they were told all signage had to be in English, which goes against the city's recently approved bi-lingual status.

The NZTA says it respects the importance of Te Reo and the likely outcome will be two separate signs - one bearing a bi-lingual welcome, with the speed limit on the other.
