'Have a better drug testing protocol' - Tom Walsh's coach delivers serve at weightlifting over doping

April 6, 2018

Tom Walsh's coach had tongues wagging in the press room after taking a massive serve at the doping regime in weightlifting.

Dale Stevenson, sporting what is likely to be an impressive beard after losing a recent bet with his charge, was asked what the chances were of a world record being broken when the athletics programme begins on the Gold Coast.

"Moderate," he told reporters at a pre-competition press conference today.

"World records in athletics are tougher than weightlifting, we don't have weight divisions or different categories. We also have a better drug testing protocol in athletics than they do in weightlifting, so the records are a lot tougher.

An athletics world record hasn't been broken at the Commonwealth Games since 1974.

Walsh and Stevenson will look to end that drought when the shot put world champion begins his campaign for gold on Sunday, with the final taking place at Carrara Stadium the following day.
