Commonwealth Games: Kiwi squash pair qualify for men's and women's quarter finals

April 7, 2018
In Joelle King and Paul Coll, NZ has two of the most in-form squash players on the planet.

The Kiwi Commonwealth Games singles squash field has been halved, with only star duo Joelle King and Paul Coll qualifying for their respective quarter-finals.

World No.4 King easily accounted for Malaysian Sivasangari Subramaniam 11-3 9-11 11-7 11-3 in Friday's round of 16 women's singles clash, barely breaking out of second gear, while Coll defeated Malaysian Ivan Yuen 11-5 11-6 11-4 in the men's event.

However, Amanda Landers-Murphy in the women's singles and Campbell Grayson in the men's singles both fell to defeats.

Landers-Murphy was outclassed by English top seed Laura Massaro, losing 8-11 11-13 8-11, while Grayson was defeated 8-11 11-6 7-11 7-11 by Englishman James Willstrop.

As a result, King will go on to face Indian Joshna Chinappa in Saturday's final-eight clash, while Coll will confront the challenge of Englishman Daryl Selby.

Both will back their chances of semi-final berths as they chase Games gold.

"My length dropped off a little bit," the Waikato-born, 29-year-old King said of her lost second match against Subramaniam.

"I know that she's a dangerous player - if she has any opportunity to go short and attack the ball, she will, so that's kind of what happened.

"Once I went back to basics, I gained control again."
