A Commonwealth Games athlete was hospitalised on the Gold Coast yesterday with malaria.

The local organising committee confirmed that a 23-year-old athlete was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.

“The patient received immediate treatment for malaria on arrival at GCUH,” games organisers told the Gold Coast Bulletin in a statement.

Organisers could not reveal which nation the athlete was from because of patient confidentiality.

Malaria can be acquired in mainland Australia so it is likely that the athlete is from a visiting nation.
