Former Manly coach Geoff Toovey has applied for the vacant Kiwis coaching job, saying the role is “a fantastic responsibility and opportunity”.
The Sea Eagles great said he had sent the NZRL his resume in the week where the incumbent coach David Kidwell revealed he would not reapply for his position.
Toovey was excited by the calibre of athlete in the team but believed the Kiwis had underachieved.
"New Zealand is a country full of terrific athletes and there are quite a few of them [that] are rugby league players," Toovey told NRL.com.
"I also think the Kiwis have under-achieved as far as their potential goes."
The Sea Eagles great would be willing to move to New Zealand if he was successful.
"I am relatively free now and have no ties to keep me here. But I'm not sure of the specifics entailed with the job yet, but I am flexible," he said.
Toovey was sacked by Manly after the 2015 NRL season after leading the Sea Eagles to 61 wins in 105 games including a berth in the 2013 NRL grand final.
He last coached in England with the Bradford Bulls where he managed just six wins in 26 games.
