March 25, 2018

Police have named the man who died while diving in Fiordland's Doubtful Sound yesterday afternoon.

Ian Gregory Wells, 54, from Roxburgh got into trouble about 2pm and despite CPR being performed, he died at the scene.

The two people who helped bring him to the surface near Bauza Island were flown to Invercargill Hospital as a precaution, police said.

Sergeant Tod Hollebon said three people from a party of nine on a boat had gone for a dive when Mr Wells got in trouble.

The death has been referred to the coroner and support is being given to the man's family, he said.
