Barack Obama offered a fleeting wave to fans congregated outside Auckland's Viaduct Events Centre last night following an exclusive dinner with 1000 guests.

The former US President waved to the crowd as he entered a BMW sedan in the middle of a long convoy of vehicles exiting.

Obama was interviewed by Kiwi actor Sam Neill during the event at which a choice of slow-cooked beef short-rib or Akaroa salmon was on offer for dinner.

Attending the dinner was National leader Simon Bridges, and other MPs including Judith Collins, Shane Jones, and Auckland Mayor Phil Goff.

Mr Obama leaves New Zealand later today for Australia.
