A 57-year-old canoeist, suffering from hypothermia, was found by a rescue helicopter crew after he became lost off a Northland beach last night.

Maritime New Zealand said the man was paddling a home-made canoe, which had capsized in the water just off Ripiro Beach.

He was still clinging to his canoe when rescuers found him about 9pm last night.

His rescue was put down to him carrying and activated a personal locator beacon.

It's believed he had been in the water for about two hours, and he was severely hypothermic.
