A prisoner has died at Hawke's Bay regional Prison this afternoon.
Hawke's Bay Regional Prison director George Massingham said in a statement the death of the man "appears to suicide".
"Staff made every effort to save him and our thoughts are with his family and friends. Prisoners and staff have also been affected by the man’s death and will be provided support," Mr Massingham said.
Police have been notified of the incident by Hawke's Bay regional prison and an investigation is under way to determine cause of death.
All deaths in custody are also investigated by the independent Corrections Inspectorate and advised to the Office of the Ombudsman.
