A head on crash in Ashburton this morning has closed part of State Highway 1 and left four people injured.
Police were called to the crash involving two cars at around 6.00am at the intersection of State Hightway 1 and Dromore Methven Road.
A Police spokesperson’s confirmed with 1 NEWS four people are trapped and are being extracted. Two people have received serious injuries while a further two have moderate injuries.
A helicopter is on its way to the scene from Christchurch.
The road is closed and diversions are in place at Stanley Road and Winchmore Dromore Road.
The Serious Crash Unit will be investigating.
Meanwhile, in Auckland a crash on the Southern Motorway at Takanini has caused delays for motorists heading southbound.
Police were called to the scene where a car crashed into the barrier and rolled around 7.00am between Hill and Alfriston Road.
One person has moderate injuries while another has minor injuries.
The motorway is currently down to one lane and Police say traffic is building.
