Watch: 'Very cute' great white shark explodes out of the water to devour mince pie near Stewart Island

A large great white shark has been captured on video leaping out of the ocean to devour a mince pie that was floating in the water off Stewart Island on the weekend.

The amazing footage was captured by Auckland woman Rose Gullery on Saturday, and is perhaps the first time a great white shark has ever been caught on camera swallowing up the quintessentially Kiwi snack.

"Seeing the shark leap out of the water was truly amazing," Rose Gullery told Yahoo7.

The startling images were taken from a Shark Cage Dive NZ boat as those on-board stopped for lunch.

Little did they know the super predator would also be joining them for a bite to eat when an unwanted mince pie was thrown overboard.

"A fellow diver said to me, imagine if a shark came up to eat the pie - I started rolling my camera and what felt like two seconds later the shark came up, took the pie in its mouth and dived back down," Ms Gullery explained to Yahoo7.

The experience was also a rare sight for experienced workers on the boat.

"The crew said it is rare for great whites to breach - so seeing one come up for a pie was very cute I thought," Ms Gullery said.
