Watch: Sky above Auckland's Rangitoto Island illuminated purple as lightning hits Hauraki Gulf

The power and beauty of Mother Nature was on show over Auckland last night as a lightning storm hit the city.

From Mission Bay, Andre Morrison filmed lightning strike over Rangitoto Island in the Hauraki Gulf, where the sky became momentarily illuminated purple.

Last night's bad weather continues in the City of Sails today, with rain across much of the city.
