The government is offering a subsidy for high risk business who would benefit from the fog cannons bringing the price from thousands of dollars down to just $200.

Police Minister Stuart Nash says "It was just un-affordable at $2000"

Already 20 retailers have had them installed and another 400 high risk areas will qualify for the generous subsidy.

"Initally we started with a scan of what premises were most often hit. They will form some of the risk areas" says District Commander Jill Rogers.

Alongside the new device the government has promised a stronger presence on the streets

Mr Nash says "We need more officers on our streets and thats why we've promised 1800 more over 3 years. That's where the real prevention happens".

Last year there were more than 1300 aggravated robberies nation wide, more then 400 were in Manukau, Auckland alone.
