Hundreds of homes are in the path of a new motorway planned for State Highway One between Otaki and Levin, north of Wellington.
The Transport Agency has released a shortlist of nine routes, affecting 400 homes altogether.
The agency says that number will come down once the route's been finalised, but it's likely some people will have to move.
Those living in the area will find out the fate of their homes by the middle of the year.
