One person has died following a water rescue at the Awhitu Regional Park on Auckland's Manukau Harbour.
Police say they were called to the scene at 12.40pm following reports three people were in trouble in the water.
One person died at the scene and two others were taken to Middlemore Hospital by helicopter for assessment, police said.
Crew of the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter were dispatched to the Awhitu Peninsula, on the south side of the Manukau Heads, at 12.45pm having received reports that three people were struggling in the water.
When the crew arrived, CPR was in progress on an adult male patient, but he died at the scene, a spokesman for the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust told 1 NEWS.
"Crew of Westpac 2 assisted two children who had been rescued prior to the rescue helicopter arriving at the scene," the spokesman said.
Crew member, intensive care paramedic Russell Clark, said it is believed the trio had made their way by foot to a small island to fish, about 200 metres offshore, at low tide and had got caught short by the rising incoming tide on the way back.
The children had swallowed some water and were flown to Middlemore Hospital in a moderate condition.
Mr Clark also attended yesterday's tragic accident in the Waitakere Ranges where two teenage boys died after they were swept away in flash flooding.
A group of five teenage boys were swimming near the Cascade Falls when heavy rain hit the area and lead to the deaths of the 17-year-old's.
