New Zealand slammed by more than 11,000 lightning strikes today

New Zealand has been slammed with over 11,000 lightning strikes today.

The MetService said there have been over 11,325 strikes recorded so far today, twice the number of the second-highest day (January 3).

It warned of thunderstorms across the North Island, saying people need to be aware of heavy rain and damaging wind gusts.
