Two people badly injured after car crashes into ditch in Waikato

A car crash in Waikato has left two people badly injured.

One person is in a critical condition and another is in a serious condition after a car crashed into a ditch in Waikato this morning.

Police were called to the crash on Waitomo Valley Road, Otorohanga just before 11am today.

A police spokesperson told 1 NEWS the occupants of the car were both airlifted to Waikato Hospital.

Waitomo Valley Road is closed due to the crash and diversions are in place at Waitomo Valley Road and Haurua Road.  

The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to the acciident scene just after 11am.

The helicopter service says a 19-year-old male and a 21-year-old female were attended to by St John's at the scene prior to the rescue helicopter's arrival.  

After further assessment by the rescue helicopter's onboard Waikato Hospital intensive care unit doctor and intensive care paramedic, it was determined that both patients were suffering from suspected back, spinal and pelvic injuries and they were airlifted to Waikato Hospital for further treatment.
