Two people killed after crash on State Highway 16 in Auckland

Two people have died following a car crash on State Highway 16 in Auckland this afternoon. 

Three people were transported to Auckland Hospital in serious condition following the three car crash on SH16, Waimauku which occurred at 4.55pm.

A senior sergeant on the scene told 1 NEWS the incident occurred after a car in the northbound lane lost control before drifting into the southbound lane, hitting two other vehicles.

Police believe the wet weather conditions may be a factor which caused the driver to lose control.

Police say that two people were trapped inside one of the vehicles and both have died.

The road is currently closed while emergency services attend the scene.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.
