Christchurch City Council has held off introducing water restrictions after rain and cooler temperatures were forecast for this week.
The current high temperatures were making it difficult for water to pass through pipes and into reservoirs fast enough to meet demand.
The city was told to conserve water over the weekend, however more than half a billion litres of water was used.
Council Three Waters and Waste Technical Manager Tim Drennan said if consumption was higher water pressure would fall, which could be a "serious concern" for firefighting.
"Thankfully the hot conditions are predicted to ease in the next few days with temperatures in the low 20s and some rain also expected. While this will provide some relief, it's not a solution and we're still asking people to watch their water use," he said.
"We're still advising people to only water their garden before 6am or after 9pm."
