Morrinsville water leak fixed but restrictions remain in place for now

December 11, 2017
Workmen have located what they think is the source of the Morrinsville leak and are undertaking repairs.

Morrinsville residents will be asked to conserve water in the wake of the town's major reservoir leak.

Matamata-Piako District Council spokesman Eion Scott told NZ Newswire on Monday the mains pipe was fixed at about 5pm on Sunday afternoon.

The Waikato town's 6000 residents were asked not to shower, wash clothes or flush toilets - the latter "unless necessary" - or use water outdoors on Saturday and Sunday after water levels dropped to a critical level.

Three water tankers were made available and still remain in place, including outside the council offices on Canada Street, where people can fill bottles.

Mr Scott said residents were being asked to open their taps and flush out water until it was coming through satisfactorily.

There had been a couple of breaks in pipes this year for the council, he said.

"It's been unfortunate but one of those things," he said.

"We're still looking at restrictions being put in place because of the [water] levels - only use water if it is absolutely essential is the message we have."
