The Auckland Regional Health Service is investigating the death of a person with symptoms of meningococcal disease.
The ARHS says the death fits the case definition of meningococcal disease.
It says it is working directly with close contacts of the person to prevent further transmission of the disease.
There is no risk to members of the public, and the family of the deceased has asked for privacy at this sad time, the regional health service said in a statement.
Meningococcal is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by the spread of bacteria from prolonged contact with an infected person.
Symptoms include fevers, headaches, vomiting, joint and muscle aches, loss of consciousness and rashes with purple or red spots or bruising.
There are around 28 cases of meningococcal disease in Auckland every year.
