Police say a person has died in a house fire in the town of Wairoa overnight.

The fire broke out at a property on Kiwi Road about 10.30pm last night.

Police this morning said they guarded the scene overnight and are now investigating the cause.

An examination of the scene is taking place this morning.

The name of the deceased cannot be released until next of kin are notified.
