Petrol prices in many parts of the country are at their highest level in three years, however all around New Zealand some suburbs offer cheaper petrol than others.
Energy Minister Dr Megan Woods said there is more evidence pointing to the fact that people aren’t paying a fair price at the petrol pump around different parts of the country.
"Different suburbs you might be paying different prices, people have been noticing that they’re not getting a fair go when filling up their car," she told TVNZ 1's Breakfast today.
Dr Woods will be releasing a long-awaited report regarding petrol pricing this afternoon.
She said the AA claims fuel margins are too high.
"The reality is that we’re not seeing a market that’s providing competitive prices," she said.
"We need to ask some hard questions around this."
According to Dr Woods, there needs to be a change in the Commerce Act to give the Commerce Commission market study powers.
"There’s more information we need and the Commerce Commission needs to get those answers."
She said there is no "quick fix".
“We simply must begin the work on this so people can have the confidence that people can have a fair price when filling up."
