Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wished a reluctant Hilary Barry a happy birthday today, but expressed surprise the host of TVNZ 1's Breakfast show was at work at all.

Barry's co-host Jack Tame delighted in telling the show's guests it was Barry's big day, and Ms Ardern didn't let her down, wishing her a heart-felt happy birthday.

"Have the best birthday," Ms Ardern said.

"Why you're at work I don't understand."

Barry said getting up at 3.10am on her birthday meant she "wasn't living my best life".
