An Australian couple vowed to divorce if Australia legislated for same-sex marriage.
Nick and Sarah Jensen made a pledge in 2015 to Canberra City News that if gay couples were allowed to wed, they would end their 10-year marriage.
Now, following the 'yes' vote on Wednesday, where 62 per cent of Australians showed their support for same-sex marriage, a Sydney family lawyer is offering his services to the Jensens.
Michael Tiyce, from Tiyce & Lawyers in Sydney, told News Corp that he wanted to help the couple keep their promise to Australia because according to him, "they are going to need it."
Tiyce said that divorcing will be difficult given Australia's divorce requirements, such as the couple needing to be separated for a continuous period of 12 months.
“As I understand the position taken by Nick and Sarah, they intend to divorce, but still remain together and have more children." he said.
Tiyce said that this is known as 'wedlock', which is why a number of gay couples who married overseas are not always able to divorce in Australia because their post-2004 marriage is not recognised.
“I understand that may be even more uncomfortable for Nick and Sarah, hence my offer to help them out of the institution they support keeping closed to gays,” he said.
The couple have not commented whether their divorce plans would proceed.
