Three people have been hospitalised - and one is still in critical condition - after possibly eating contaminated wild boar.
The three, from Putaruru in south Waikato - Shibu Kochummen, his wife Subi Babu and his mother Alekutty Daniel - were found by paramedics lying unconscious in their home on Friday night after Mr Kochummen collapsed midway through making an emergency call for help, Newstalk ZB reported.
Waikato DHB medical officer of health Dr Richard Vipond told NZ Newswire that Mr Kochummen and Ms Daniel are stable on a ward, while Ms Babu is still in a critical condition in the hospital's high dependency unit.
It was initially thought the trio could be paralysed.
The couple's two children - a 7-year-old and 1-year-old - are being looked after by a local church group, and the Indian High Commission and Ministry for Vulnerable Children have been approached to help the family.
Findings from a detailed toxicology report are expected on Friday and Dr Vipond says the potential source for the illness is still to be determined.
"We do not have any evidence to determine any broader contaminated game meat, or that there is a risk to public health."
