Tonga's rugby league stars are continually blown away by the level of support from fans so far in this year's World Cup, five-eighth Tui Lolohea has said.

Mate Ma'a Tonga have been a standout so far in this year's tournament both on and off the field, with large crowds greeting the team everywhere they go.

The team's trip to Christchurch this week has been no different, with thousands turning out to show their support.

When asked about the Christchurch fans, Lolohea joked in his response.

"I thought there was about 10, there's about 5000," he told 1 NEWS.

"It's been a good time in Christchurch, the fans have made us feel welcome since we turned up at the airport."

"It means a lot to us."

Tonga face Lebanon in the Rugby League World Cup quarter-final at Christchurch's AMI Stadium on Saturday.
