Police watchdog rules Lower Hutt arrest and pepper spraying of man was unlawful

November 16, 2017

The Independent Police Conduct Authority says the 2015 pepper spraying and arrest of a man in Lower Hutt was unlawful.

On December 23 2015, Police went to an address to serve a trespass notice and after a conversation with a man, "the incident escalated," Police said, and a man was arrested after being pepper sprayed.

Police said in a statement today that the officers involved have received "further training and constructive feedback".

"New Zealand Police strive to deliver policing to the highest standards and learnings have been taken from this incident," Inspector Chris Bensemann said.

Police said they have apologised to the man for the arrest and use of pepper spray.
