All Blacks coach Steve Hansen isn't holding anything against Sonny Bill Williams after this morning's brain snap in the 38-18 win over France, instead acknowledging the moment was a chance to learn - for both of them.
Williams was yellow carded and gave France a penalty try after he deliberately knocked a ball dead off a cross kick while in goal - a move that is illegal in rugby but allowed in league.
Hansen said the scenario was just one his midfielder didn't know about.
"Sonny doesn't know the rules because he was playing league," he said.
"In league, you're allowed to smash it over the dead ball line."
While many fans were left bewildered as to why a penalty try was given after Williams was yellow-carded, Hansen said assistant coach Ian Foster taught him the reasoning during this morning's game.
"I got my lesson myself from Foster that once you've committed an offence in the goal area, it's like you're not there - they make you invisible and they felt that the French man was going to catch the ball so it's a try."
