Magnitude 4.8 quake rattles central New Zealand

November 13, 2017

A magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck in Cook Strait overnight at about 11.28pm.

More than 11,000 people felt the shake according to the GeoNet site with people feeling the shake in Wellington, Hutt Valley, Kapiti Coast, Taranaki, Manawatu and Marlborough.

The quake was centred about 30km west of Wellington at a depth of 36km, according to GeoNet.

There have been no reports of damage.
