Police say the 36-year-old man lived in the Hutt Valley and they have referred the death to the coroner.

"There is a possibility that this death may not have been caused by a synthetic drug and this is ultimately for the Coroner to decide," says Hutt Valley Area Commander, Inspector Sean Hansen.

In separate incidents, police in Porirua say they have attended a number of incidents since the weekend in relation to the effects of synthetic drugs.

Nine people are believed to have died from the results of synthetic cannabis in Auckland during a spate of incidents earlier this year.
