Watch: Labour's Willow-Jean Prime sings gorgeous Maori waiata to begin her maiden speech to Parliament

November 9, 2017

Labour MP Willow-Jean Prime opened her maiden speech to Parliament with a hauntingly beautiful Maori waiata today.

Ms Prime captivated the rest of the house with her waiata, before giving a wide ranging speech which touched on her upbringing and what issues she hopes to tackle in Parliament.

"Aotearoa is not in good shape, we are not taking care of our children, not one more child should live in poverty," Ms Prime said during her speech.

The Labour MP and new mum also thanked her "amazing husband Dion" who helped her by holding it down at home.

Ms Prime was without her newborn baby Heeni during the speech, who proved a hit in Parliament yesterday being the recipient of many cuddles.
