Whitelock laid a wreath on the Tomb of an Unknown Soldier during the rekindling of the eternal flame ceremony at the Arc De Triomphe.

The All Blacks lock said the event was important but also held a special significance to him.

"It's very, very humbling to be a part of ceremony like this that happens every day and it has happened every day since 1920 so to be part of it is very humbling for myself and the All Blacks as well."

Whitelock told media he had multiple family links to wars that made the moment more grounding.

"I have a few links - my grandfather served in the Pacific in World War II and I have a lot of family history sprinkled right through a number of the wars."
