The beautiful sounds of a Maori waiata have been heard in Parliament after Labour MP Tamati Coffey's maiden speech received a warm reception.

Mr Coffey, a former TVNZ weather presenter, also got a standing ovation from his colleagues, before performing hongi with Green Party members and other MPs on his side of the House.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and other members of the Labour camp looked up at the gallery as the waiata was performed, respectfully enjoying the performance.

Mr Coffey beat Waiariki incumbent Te Ururoa Flavell to gain entry into Parliament, a win which effectively ended the Maori Party's chances of having any representatives in the current government.
